Some things need a person, not an app

PawPaw is useful for understanding your dog and for the everyday work of living together. A bite, a sudden change, or a situation that frightens you is different — that is when you want a qualified behaviourist, and this is how to reach one.

What a behaviourist actually does

A qualified behaviourist works out why a dog is doing something, and then changes the situation and the training so the dog has a better option. They watch the dog, ask about the household, the routine and the history, and give you a plan you carry out over weeks — not a trick that works this afternoon.

They also rule things in and out that an app cannot. Pain is one of the most common causes of a sudden behaviour change, so a good behaviourist will often send you to a vet first, and will say so.

What they are not is a dog trainer teaching obedience, and they are not an emergency service. If a dog has injured someone badly, or a person is in immediate danger, deal with safety first.

When to get help

If any of these sound like your week

None of it means you have failed your dog. It means the situation has got past the point where reading things online is the right tool.

One message. You can say as little as you like — and you decide what, if anything, about your dog goes with it.

What happens next

So you know what you are walking into

  1. A person reads it. During the pilot every message is read and answered by hand. There is no bot on the other end, no booking system and no form to fill in afterwards.
  2. They may ask you to see a vet first. Especially if the behaviour changed suddenly. That is not a brush-off — pain is one of the most common causes, and it changes the whole plan.
  3. You will be asked about the world around your dog. Who is in the house, the other dogs, the walk, what happened before. If you have done the Quiz you already have most of that written down.
  4. How long a reply takes. To be confirmed The pilot has not set a response time yet. Until it has, this page does not promise one.
  5. Whether it costs anything. To be confirmed Not decided. The first message and the reply, and what a consultation costs if you go ahead, all need to be stated here before launch — not discovered afterwards.

If a person or another animal is in immediate danger, or your dog is injured, contact a vet or emergency service now rather than waiting for a reply here.
